Binder or Pressure garments
Dr Bheem explains the requirement of binders, “There is a requirement for a pressure garment. You call them binders, I call them pressure garments, it’s the same. So the binders that you were wearing earlier would not work because of the breasts you have now. So these need to be tailored again, so the day we are taking out your drains, that time we take a measurement of your chest for binders. And on day 10 when I open your stitches on your nipples then we need the binders available on hand.”
Wearing the binders
“So right after we open the stitches for DI, we make the patients wear the binders. So in the keyhole the day after the surgery itself we can take the measurements for the binders. The day we take out the drains he is supposed to wear the binders. How binders work is that how much ever you wear it’s good.”
How long should I wear a binder?
“So in the initial three months period, it is extremely important. So what I will advise now is that you wake up and take a bath and then you wear your binder in the morning and do it till the evening 7 to 8.”
Keep this in mind!
“Never wear the binder at night, or even while sleeping you shouldn’t wear a binder. Even if you are sleeping for half an hour in the daytime or even 10 minutes so please open the zip of the binder. You do that because the chest cannot move properly if it is being compressed by the binder so it is harmful to the body. So at least 8 to 10 hours, depending on your size too.”
How long should I wear it?
Dr Bheem explains, “If this is someone with a heavy chest, then you will have to wear it for 6 months or 8 months then the results would be great. Recently I operated on someone who was 120kgs in weight and then someone who is 108kgs, so for them, I have to tell them that they have to wear the binder for 8 months so the result would be great. Slowly your skin will become tighter. It is because the content of fat in the body is so much that it will take a long time. So as heavy chested as you are, as heavy as you are, that much more time it will take for this to work.”
Pain Killers
What about painkillers? Well, this is what Dr Bheem says, “5 days and most of the patients are walking around and such the next day itself. So top surgery comes under simple surgeries so it depends on the pain sensitivity of the individual, five days is the maximum after that I haven’t prescribed painkillers to anyone. Till 5 days I write combiflam or whatever suits them. So this is for the initial 2-3 days. Some of the patients feel extremely weak, so almost 99% of the people have told me that they would like to stay in the hospital for a day more. So a lot of them feel they are really sick so we keep them for an extra day.”
