What is a GD Certificate? Explained by Dr Trinka Arora
We all need a GD certificate to go forward in our hormone treatment. But what is a GD certificate? Dr Trinka Arora will explain
What is a GD Certificate? What do I need it for?
GD Certificate is a certificate that helps you start the process of transition. This is a certificate that certifies that the patient has gender dysphoria.
In 1994, the term used for this was gender-identity disorder. Since 2013, the term has been replaced and the term gender dysphoria is used instead. So what this is certifying is that the person has a low feeling or uneasiness about their own gender. So they want to move forward from this feeling of dysphoria and change their life to one that aligns with how they feel. So the process that starts whether it be of Hormone Therapy or HRT or whether it is about legally changing names and documents, the GD Certificate becomes the basic requirement.
How much time does it take to get a GD certificate? And how can we get it?
So for GD Certificates, one has to approach a psychiatrist or a psychologist.
Once you have approached a psychologist or psychiatrist, they will talk to you and they will make sure that there are cases where there is clarity from the very beginning. So say, the patient has accepted their dysphoria and has started living according to their gender presentation then it takes only one session of talking to certify them. For others, there might be a period of not understanding what is going on and in that case, it takes a long time to bring clarity to people. So even though it might feel like dysphoria, it could be anything else, some other mental disorder or dysfunction. So clarity is required for which counselling and assessment are employed. After we get our clarity can we make a certificate?
So for some, there is acceptance from themselves, as well as family, and society leading normal lives- in these cases, one session is enough. But for others, they need 2-3 months, 2-3 sessions. It all depends on what the state is.
How does the GD evaluation bring clarity?
So the counselling sessions are utilised for talking and understanding emotions. Understanding thoughts and what people feel. Through these understandings, you are helped in understanding your situation. There is a trial to involve families and understand your childhood experiences and how you were brought up. Are there any traumas from the past that are bringing about these thoughts?
There can also be a use of personality assessments that can be used to see if there is a mental disorder that is similar that gives a feeling like this. So all of this is a long process which will help us in accepting and realising who we are as people. This is my identity, this is what I am happy with and this is how I want to lead my future life are some of the clarifications that it can help achieve.
