Why has Gender Dysphoria become more prevalent in the current century? Dr Trinka Arora explains
These days we see a lot of people go through gender dysphoria. Why are the rates of Gender Dysphoria rising? Why is it much more than, say, the 19th century? Dr Trinka Arora tells us about it.
Why is Gender Dysphoria more prevalent now?
It is not the case that the rates have increased. There were no laws that supported this, there were also not a lot of people who accepted it and there wasn’t enough awareness. So now due to COVID things have changed and become smoother. Things have become available online, even doctors. And laws have changed to help transition. And these reasons make the visibility more but this existed back in the 19th century too.
Our Vedas talk about Gods who change their gender presentations, who are like ardhanareshwar, Mohini and even in our history, we find mentions of trans people working in harems of our kings. The existence of trans people has been heavily documented. These days, we are asking for our rights, and our equal position in society and we get news coverage while doing so. Our issues are often politicised and debated on news channels resulting in more people knowing about our existence more and more. But if we think about it then we make up about 0.3-0.6 percent of the human race and this has been a constant rate. And this is a very low percentage, and even lower in places like India where probably most of us are scared to come out.
It is sad to see that during the reign of kings, there was more acceptance than now. The laws need to be changed to make sure that we are granted protection.
