Do I need the TG ID for Government welfare schemes?
Can I avail of government schemes for Transpeople without a TG Card? By Sriraksha V Srivastava
Affirmative action for trans people and government schemes for trans people are all coming to us in a few years. How can we avail these benefits? Sriraksha V Srivastava from CLPR will explain it to us.
Can a gazette notification do?
So increasingly state governments have started schemes for transgender people like reservations or posts for them and affirmative actions, cash for COVID protection, or ration help. All of it is being given through the TG Card.
This is because the tracking is easier and because the people are easier to verify.
Does the ACT mandate its use?
The ACT itself does not talk about how it will become mandatory or when. Additionally, a trans person can be benefited from government schemes only if they have a TG Card is not stated in the ACT. But increasingly governments are asking for TG cards.
The issues with TG Card
A lot of trans people feel that the two-step process of showing any medical intervention, especially surgical ones is a violatory process and makes them uneasy about acquiring the TG Card. This two-step process is problematic.
Will TG cards become mandatory?
Most affirmative action schemes are looking for a TG Card as proof. So if you have this then it will be better for you. Most people don’t like this medical intervention clause. But increasingly posts are demanding this so if you apply for anything from a public post to reservation to ration, you would be directed to get a TG Card first.
