Personal choice
Going forward with Orchidectomy or sticking to anti-androgens is a personal choice the patient has to make. Keeping that in mind, it is extremely important that we look at the other factors involved.
What does the doctor say?
It is crucial here that we know what the doctor says about this. Does the doctor think that we are to do something specific? Well, Dr. Pramila Kalra says, “No it’s not like that. Again, we leave it to the individual. There is no set of criteria that we have to force them to go for surgery. It all depends on the person, and what they want to do.” So you can very well choose not to go through with the surgery.
Not doing Orchidectomy
Well, let’s say you don’t want to go through an orchidectomy. Dr Kalra explains what a doctor would do if such is the case, “If they have not done an orchidectomy then we can give them leucocytes to maintain hormone levels and we give them estrogen from outside. In case they have done the surgery then we just administer estrogen. Again there is no such recommendation as such.”
Benefit of Orchidectomy
Additionally, says Dr Kalra, “The only thing is that if they go through with orchidectomy then their male hormone level becomes almost negligible.”
So should I go for it?
Dr Kalra assures that “With the leucocyte, it may come down but not to that level. So that way some people who want almost negligible levels go for orchidectomy but if not then this also works. It’s their choice. It’s their personal decision.”
