Myths about Gender Dysphoria ?
If a parent comes to Dr Mohan asking for this then he says he will spend time explaining to them what gender dysphoria is, and give them literature to read about gender dysphoria because you cannot cure this, it is not an illness to be cured. It is a condition that we still don’t know how it develops. There are lots of literature and studies looking at whether it is a hereditary problem or a genetic problem and everything has come out to be zero. It’s not an illness to be cured, it’s a condition. You can’t cure it. If you decide not to go through with transitioning then the psychiatrist can help in coping with your gender dysphoria. This is a choice that you have made. Someone who is a transwoman should not hear from a psychiatrist that they should cope with being a male.
To draw a parallel, Dr Mohan talks about how 20-30 years ago homosexuality was supposedly treatable. It was considered a delusion and they tried to medicinally cure it with anti-psychotics or they thought of them as obsessions and they were given anti-obsessionals. Nothing gave any kind of benefit, there were also behavioural therapies in place. Now the official stance was “It’s not an illness, it’s a condition and we should just let people live.”
The only reason that a psychiatrist comes into the picture is because the law makes two certificates pre-requisites otherwise there is no role of a psychiatrist.
