Do I need blood tests for GD Consultation?
It is not mandatory, according to Dr Mohan but in case there are some doubts about certain hormonal conditions then hormonal tests like thyroid and sexual hormones are done. However, it is not mandatory for the diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Because physical features will tell you that all the hormones are working fine Dr Mohan doesn’t like going forward with it.
What has to be ruled out using blood tests?
So hormone tests, are necessary when you are consulting an endocrinologist. The endocrinologist will only start their treatment when the person has a baseline for most of their hormones. Not only the sex hormones but a wide variety because start hormone treatment will have an effect on everything so they would do an entire review of all hormones. So sometimes the psychiatrist isn’t the first person to be approached. In case you approach the endocrinologist first then you would have been advised to do a basic blood work and then talk to the psychiatrist. So by then, you would’ve learnt a lot about the biochemical and hormonal factors because the endocrinologist would have educated you. Sometimes you meet a surgeon first and then the surgeon asks you to talk to an endocrinologist and a psychiatrist.
But if you are going to the psychiatrist first then he will explain to you how the surgery goes, how the endocrinologic treatment goes and how they are both irreversible.
Even intersex conditions are clear from the secondary sexual characteristics and the patient’s history.
