Why can’t I get an erection Is it because of HRT or are there other factors ?
- Dr Cameil Welling mentions that getting a hard erection is difficult for some of us. But is there something other than hormone therapy that influences this? What happens to those of us who are younger?
How do hormones work?
Dr Cameil explains that people with male anatomy have a peak level of testosterone during their 20s and 30s. After that the testosterone level decreases which leads to problems in having an erection but every human is different. Some of us may also face this during our teens while others may not face it even when they are 80.
What is the difficulty in getting an erection?
Erection problems can happen due to physiological as well as emotional issues. It could be your hormones or the blood flow in your body. It could also be fear- “Will I orgasm too soon?” “Will they judge me?”
Sexology is a combination of medical and physiological issues. Sex is not just medical or emotional, it is a combination of both. So if any of us is starting our HRT then we should be aware that there might be trouble in achieving an erection especially, hard erections which would mean it will take longer to have an orgasm. This means that sex will not be enjoyable. This is different for all of us. Because does the way you like sex involve an erection? Just because I identify as a woman does not mean that I am willing to remove my penis- it can be a part of my feminity and my sexual life. And not having erections could also bring excitement. Thanks to those hormones you have stopped getting erections completely and that makes you comfortable. There is no right or wrong in this. If you don’t want erections or if you want them can guide your hormone treatment. There are different ways to transition.
What are the different options for hormones?
The most important question is if you are just taking estrogen or if you are taking blockers as well. Testosterone is the most important in regulating erections. The amount of sperm that is being made or your ejaculation can be reduced if you take a blocker and reduce the level of testosterone. And then you can see that blockers are essential in reducing your erections and when there are fewer sperms then there are fewer fluids and all of this impacts erections.
