What is Pre-exposure prophylaxis and how can it protect me against HIV transmission ?
We know now that we can prevent HIV with PrEP but what if I just got exposed to HIV today? What can I do? Dr Camiel Welling will tell us.
What should I do if I get exposed to HIV?
PrEP is for Pre Exposure which is when you haven’t been exposed to HIV. While PEP is available which is Post Exposure. So say, you are an assault victim then there is a risk for exposure. So if you get this medication within 48 hours of exposure or however soon. This can be done within 72 hours. This can save you from the virus in many cases. So if you are ever in a situation where the condom breaks or you were really drunk and you don’t remember. This is not just for harassment, sometimes we are not in a state to make these decisions but you can go to any clinic and get PEP. This might be available wherever you get PrEP.
How many days should one take PrEP?
There are two ways to take PrEP. There is a pill which you can take daily so you always stay protected, this is the easiest way.
How do I start taking PrEP?
If you are starting with PrEP then it is important that you take an HIV test so you know for sure if you have HIV or not. But if you have HIV then you can ask for treatment. There is an option to take it every day, and in 5 days it will start working fully. And the second is that you only take it if you are going to have sex. So if you don’t indulge in sex regularly- maybe twice a month. If you go to a party or you meet someone who is visiting then you take it only before that. For some of us, it is a burden to take a tablet every day so you can take it sometimes. So this means that you will have to take 2 tablets, 2 hours before having sex. And then after 24 hours, you need to take another one and another one after another 24 hours. This gives the same protection. It is important to know that PrEP protects you from HIV and the Hepatitis B vaccine protects you from Hepatitis B. However, PrEP is important to take because HIV cannot be prevented otherwise. While syphilis can be treated with other antibiotics. And chlamydia as well as gonorrhoea also can be cured with antibiotics. But HIV takes a lifetime so it becomes more important to prevent it because no one can cure it but others we can find treatment for.
