What preparation does vaginoplasty require ?
Surgeries like vaginoplasty are invasive surgeries that can affect a lot of our functioning- how can one prepare themselves for it?
Dr Richie Gupta talks about how this is important and the processes that one does before surgery can start are important steps in the process.
How to get ready?
The reason why the rules ask patients to come through mental health professionals is that they will talk to them and explain to them how the surgery works. Also, reproductive medicine plays an important role because there is a query about sperm and ovum banking. For future biological children, these processes are important. So even before starting hormone therapy, there needs to be sperm and ovum banking.
Will mental health affect dilation?
It is advisable that the patient goes to a psychiatrist and gets treatment for their anxiety and depression. This is so they can be in a good mental state for this procedure. And the second thing is that a lot of anxiety and depression is cured after feminizing genitoplasty is successfully done. Patients talk about how free they feel, how this is who they really are and so this makes them happy.
So a lot of the depression is cured by the procedure. There is a problem with pain management and the first few days will be really painful so there are talks so that dilation can be done easily.
What about patients who have problems with dilation?
They can take help from physiotherapy and pelvic floor therapists.
How can we manage the pain of vaginoplasty after anaesthesia wears off?
So the process is called CSE which is a continuous anaesthesia where a catheter is maintained in the patients and a continuous infusion pump gives medicines for 2 hours so that there is no issue. So for 7 to 10 days painkillers are required and then it is not needed.
