Sunitapune it does require phone number. And yes you can hide it (Settings > Privacy > Phone Number). Also remember to deactivate contacts sync (Settings > Privacy > Contacts) so your new Tg contacts can't find your number.
Also best to not give phone contacts permissions, so old phone contacts are hopefully not alerted. They still might, you need to check.
