How to get an address proof in a place of residence?

Hi,

TL;DR: How to get an address proof in a place of residence without supporting documents like rental agreement?

I'm in a situation where I'm essentially becoming homeless next month, but a relative is willing to let me stay for up to 3 months or so if I have nowhere else to go, provided I take care of my needs, etc. They themselves are living on rent. So, my legal document journey stopped. However, if I can update this new address on Aadhar, I can finish my legal transition during my stay, which will open up more opportunities for me. Here are a few of my considerations.

Getting a postpaid mobile connection. I was told they'd do physical verification to activate the sim, and the bill will have this address with which I can update my bank communication address and use the updated passbook for aadhaar or, if I'm very lucky and the case worker verifying address proof accepts the postpaid bill as "telephone bill" then I won't even need to update passbook. I got hopeful... but there is a problem. I enquired with both Airtel and Jio. According to them, there is no in-person address verification facility for postpaid connections. They told me the sim would only be sent to the address on the POA document provided. In which case, it'll be my current flat I'm vacating next month. So, there is some conflict of info here.
Try negotiating a PG rental agreement with my relative and the owner. I was told the owner would deny it if we brought it up. So, that's a dead-end.

I considered these two options, but everything points to no. I won't have the financial freedom to improve my housing situation in 3 months such as relocating or buying house/flat. So, if the address and my passport is updated, I have a shot at an overseas job. I don't have a degree, so I'll never be taken seriously here in India. However, I have a strong portfolio and have had job offers before. The legal transition and fear of living in a foreign country alone were what was holding me back from taking the plunge with the overseas job. However, now freelance is no longer reliable, that is my only shot at survival as 3 months later I'll face homelessness again.

So, what I'm asking is, if the rental agreement is in a relative's name and there is no proof of relationship document, and I can't get rentals in my name as a single/unmarried person, how do I update the aadhaar on the address I'll be residing at? There are many options for cis-women to get low rent as individuals, but I don't even though I pass. My aadhaar will not be updated in time as my TG ID card is delayed. I'll still have "Male" marked aadhaar when I leave this flat. Any advice?

The relative I'm staying with is transphobic but offered to let me stay out of a sense of duty. There isn't much flexibility in having them add my name to their rental agreement, etc.

eloise you may get it done. By getting a bona fide from your PG or hostel. Or you may get it done by sending one of the document from any address to your present location and use the same delivery status and RPAD receipt as your proof to change your voter ID card.

Maybe try contacting your post office. I believe some of them can furnish you with proof of address in such situations.

sharjeel pg isn't a valid proof of residence for this, unless they don't question it isn't but most pg or hostels don't shell out these documents.

aweo It Probably would've been good a year back, but now all personal accident policies list "Kindly visit our nearest branch office for further details or call us at our toll-free number xxxx-xxx-xxxx" instead of the option to buy. But this does give me food for thought. I'll have to find a low cost insurance policy with lax proof of address requirements and low cost.

I wanted to share: When I moved to a new place and I hadn't yet got the electricity bill with our name on it, I was able to get my address changed on my bank account by going to the bank directly, they didn't ask for any verification. Then I was able to use my bank statement to update my Aadhar.

TokumeiM could you share which bank? most banks like axis, Kotak, and sbi are strict about proof of address.

eloise It was Kotak. I think they were chill about it since I went directly in person. It might depend on the branch, some are stricter than others.

TokumeiM aw my branch very strict, I asked Kotak just last week. They explicitly told me they'd only change communication addresses on the basis of valid proof of address documents like an aadhaar, voter id, passport, and rental agreement.

Why not try to get a insurance policy, I think @mizu did do something like this I guess she can share the thread link or share again how she changed her address

My HDFC Ergo Health insurance agreed to update the address without address proof as they agreed they would much rather have the most accurate details than be bogged down by proof of address. The regular customer support didn't budge, but the grievance addressal team did. Hopefully, it works. I have to wait till I fully shift to request an address change, so I'll be there to receive it. For those of you who were able to change the Aadhaar address with your insurance policy, did the PDF digital copy work, or did you have to photograph a self-attested physical copy of the policy?

I hope in the future, aadhaar accepts self-declaration of address, maybe a sworn affidavit on stamp paper. Yes, that would be acceptable if they want to put in some hurdles. They are charging per address update anyway. This whole obsession with proof of address is silly if you think about it. If we don't live in an address, why would we want to change it? We only change it so we can receive official documents and such to new addresses such as bank welcome kit, credit card, gender updated documents, be available for passport police verification etc. My brother is out of state but still has a childhood home address on Aadhar, passport, voter id, driver's id etc because he has no need to change anything or expecting any in-persopn verification. If he needs a communication address, he simply gives his rental agreement (family of 4, so he gets rent anywhere). So it's those of us with need to update communication address etc that change address on aadhaar because if address is on aadhaar, it's accepted as proof everywhere. This proof of address system completely ignores people living with relatives or friends. Most of whom, it's people who we don't have proof of relationship documents, like uncle, aunt, cousin, friend etc. Not everyone has the flexibility to buy or rent homes. I had been stressed out about this whole month (because it can literally stall my legal transition) so far instead of just packing for the move. It took me a week to convince my insurance provider to update the address. Quite frustrating.

eloise The PDF copy should work- if bank e-statements work I don't see why a digital copy of an insurance policy shouldn't.
